A POCKET FULL OF LUCK

Carl scooted to his classroom holding his shirt pocket tight. When Carl got to his class his friend Peter was standing by the door.

“What did you bring for show-n-tell?” asked Peter.
“Something very special.” Said Carl.
“Well, where is it?” Asked Peter
“It’s right here in my pocket.” Carl said while tapping his chest.
“Nothing that small could be all that special.” Remarked Peter.
“Well it is and you’ll just have to wait and see. You’re going to wish you had one too!” smirked Carl.

“Please take your seats,” said Ms. Tucker, their teacher.
Carl sat fidgeting with the special item in his pocket.
“It’s show-n-tell time,” said Ms. Tucker. “Who would like to go first? Asked Ms. Tucker.
All the students raised their hands.
“Today Carl will be our first show-n-tell star,” said Ms. Tucker.

Carl leaped out of his seat and scurried to the front of the classroom. He patted his pocket and then began to speak. “Today, I brought something very special. It might be small, but it brings me good luck.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a shiny penny.
“I got this penny from my Mom. She said that anyone can earn a lucky penny if they do good things for others and once you get your lucky penny good things will happen to you. I bring this penny everywhere I go.” He said.
Carl could hear his friend Peter chuckle from the back of the room. “I have lots of Pennies,” shouted Peter. “What makes yours so lucky?”

Carl held his penny in the air revealing the side with the face on it. “My lucky penny has a C written on it. The C is my first initial. My Mom said that when people get a lucky penny it always has their first initial written on it, so they don’t get it mixed-up with regular pennies.” Carl finished his presentation and passed his lucky penny around the room for his classmates to see up-close.
He went back to his seat and eagerly awaited the return of his special coin. After show-n-tell was over Carl realized that he still didn’t have his penny. He raised his hand.

“Ms. Tucker, I didn’t get my lucky penny back yet. Do you know where it is?” asked Carl.
“Class, who has Carl’s penny?” asked Ms. Tucker. No one spoke-up. Carl began to get upset. “Doesn’t anyone have my penny?” he said with tears in his eyes. Carl was very sad to think that his penny might be lost.
“Carl, your penny has to be here somewhere,” said Ms. Tucker. “I’ll look for it after class is over. I’m sure I’ll find it by the time you get back from the playground. All the students headed outside to play.

Peter, Carl’s friend, was the only student who didn’t leave.
“Ms. Tucker, I have to tell you something. I lost Carl’s lucky penny,” said Peter. “I feel so bad and didn’t want Carl to know it was me.”
“Well Peter, it’s wonderful that you told the truth. Why don’t we look for it together,” she replied.

They got on their hands and knees and crawled around the floor looking everywhere for Carl’s lucky penny. They looked under desks. They searched under chairs, but they didn’t find the special coin. Then Peter jumped up and shouted, “I found it, I found it. It was under your desk!”

“Yeah, Carl will be so happy that you found his lucky coin,” exclaimed Ms. Tucker.
Carl showed up at the classroom door a few seconds later. “Did you find my lucky penny?” he asked.
“Yes, here it is. Peter is the one who found it!” stated Ms. Tucker.
Carl grabbed the penny from Ms. Tucker’s hand and held it tight to his chest. “Thank you Peter!” yelped Carl.
Ms. Tucker walked to her desk and opened her drawer. After a few seconds she walked back to where the boys were standing and handed something to Peter.

“You did a good deed today Peter so you deserve your very own lucky penny.” She said.
Peter opened his hand and found a shiny copper penny with the letter P on it. “Wow, this is great!” he said. “My very own lucky penny. I’m going to bring it to show-n-tell next week for sure!”
